TOO MUCH? TOO LITTE??
Finding the Right Volume for You
Understanding surfboard volume is key to finding the right board for your weight and skill level. In simple terms, it’s all about the ratios. For a beginner, 1 litre of volume offsets or floats 1 kilogram of weight. Making it super easy to paddle fast to catch the waves. In short the board is taking a lot of the responsibility.
This makes the volume-to-weight ratio a powerful tool in board selection. As the rider gains experience and confidence, the ratio can change. For example, Advanced Shortboarders typically ride boards with volume equal to 33–35% of their body weight, while Intermediate surfers might look at 60 - 70% and Longboarders prefer 90–100%.
This ratio helps tailor performance across all board types—whether you're surfing a high-performance shortboard or a higher-volume beginner board.
It’s a simple, science-backed approach that makes board choice easier and more precise, especially for newcomers.
